Not that long ago you could only enjoy High Definition TV (HDTV) on a HDTV capable TV or set top box.

OnAir is a software-decoding USB HDTV receiver that connects to the PC via a spare USB port.

You now not only have the ability to watch HDTV on your PC monitor but you are also able to record shows for later viewing in HDTV format. These units were first introduced to the American and Canadian markets in January 2004.

An evident advantage of using USB HDTV tuners is that it is very easy to install with PCs or laptops. With PCI you are only able to install them on a desktop computer that had a spare PCI or PCI-e socket available. Disassembling and reassembling the computer to plug in PCI tuner cards on motherboards is also risky.

With desktop PCs getting smaller inside there just might not be enough room inside the case to fit a PCI card. A cheaper card might also be prone to signal interference from inside the case as well.

Most USB TV tuners have support for 1920×1080 (ATSC) HDTV resolution. Maybe it’s a bit gimmicky but you can also have the TV playing as your wallpaper.

Most USB TV tuners have an MPEG2 Encoder chip so you are able to convert a TV signal directly to DVD MPEG2 (720×480) so now you can watch your favorite TV show on the bus or train. Using DVD-RW it is easy for the user to create DVD titles for recorded live analog TV.
